Sam Rudd Biography

Sam Rudd is a contemporary British artist whose expressive landscape and seascape paintings explore the relationship between memory, place and emotion. Drawing on a background in illustration and textile design, she creates dynamic compositions that sit between representation and abstraction, capturing the atmosphere of a landscape through colour, mark-making and intuitive gesture.

Originally trained in Visual Art, Sam enjoyed a successful career as an illustrator and textile designer, working with clients including Cath Kidston, Mulberry, Harrods, The Times and The Guardian. Her experience in drawing, pattern and design continues to shape her artistic practice today, bringing a distinctive sense of rhythm, structure and movement to her paintings.

Inspired by the countryside of rural Cheshire and the coastline of North Wales, Sam begins her creative process outdoors, filling sketchbooks with observations, sketches and notes gathered on walks and travels. These studies provide the starting point for works that evolve in the studio, where memory, imagination and emotional response become as important as direct observation.

Sam seeks to create paintings that evoke the feeling of a place rather than simply describe it. Her work is influenced by artists including Joan Eardley, Barbara Rae and Joan Mitchell, whose expressive approaches to landscape resonate strongly with her own artistic vision.

Using a combination of charcoal, acrylic and oil paint, Sam builds richly layered surfaces through an intuitive and energetic process. Loose gestural marks sit alongside considered composition, creating works that feel both spontaneous and deeply connected to the landscape.

Since returning to painting full time in 2022, Sam has exhibited throughout the UK and established a growing reputation for her distinctive works. Joyful, atmospheric and expressive, her paintings invite viewers to experience familiar places through a fresh and personal perspective.
